Current Connection 4

On the Foxnews.com webvsite there is an article called "5 percent of youth have used steroids to bulk up, study finds". According to a new study from Minnesota, they say that about five percent of middle and high school students have used anabolic steroids to put on muscle. So basically, more than one-third of boys and one-fifth of girls in this study have said they have used protein powder shakes to gain their muscle mass, and between five to ten percent have used non-steroid muscle enhancing substances, such as creatine.

Some researchers have said that the youth seeing all the buff and built women and men on advertising commercials and magazines, may have some impact on why their viewers may want to look like the people they see on televison and magazines. Dr. Linn Goldberg, from Oregon Health & Science University in Portland.

Dr. Linn Goldberg, from Oregon Health and Science University in Portland said, "really the pressure to start using (steroids) is in high school." Dr. Linn Goldberg also says, "that the 14 year olds that are coming up to high school, see all the 17 year olds which are seniors and they have some influence on the younger kids." Some of the younger kids may look up to one of those seniors and if they know of their "role model" doing steroids, they might try them to fit in or be like the older person.

Student athletes were more likely than there peers to use methods of muscle building. According to findings published in the journel Pediatrics, Asian students were three to four times more likely to have used steroids in the past year then the white students.

Since I watched the movie Parent Trap, Lindsey Lohan was always someone I looked up to. Now that I have grown up a bit, I have realized that because of all the mistakes she is and has made, she is no longer a respectable role model for children and young adults.

In a recent article, Report: Lindsay Lohan will be charged with lying to police, faces more jail time
from FoxNews.com, they have said " Lindsey will be charged with the crime of lying to police after her car accident in June on Pacific Coast Highway." Lohan told the police she was not behind the wheel of her car when it crashed into the back of an 18 wheeler. The case got filed as a misdemeanor.

She could possibly be getting into bigger trouble because of her past. She is on probation for a jewelry theft. She could get into trouble for a probation violation and the judge that was her judge for her theft could send her to jail.

After the crash, law enforcement said they had found pills scattered all in the car. Lohan's lawyer did give police documentation from Lindsey's doctor saying the pills were properly prescribed. After the crash, Lohan was at the hospital where she was interviewed by police. That is when she told them she was not behind the wheel. Lohan's lawyer was making a beeline to her client Lohan to make sure she did not say anything, but when Lohan's lawyer arrived, it was too late.

MTV News chats with Demi as the "Mean Stinks" ambassador helps spread the message and shares her tough experience. Demi Lovato Tackling Girl-To-Girl Bullying, One 'Mean' Girl At A Time. Demi surprised freshmen at the Young Women's Leadership School in East Harlem, when she came to their "Drama Free School Year" anti-bullying assembly. The 20 year old joined up with Secret to inspire students to "gang up for good" against girl to girl bullying.

Lovato shares her experiences she had with bullying. She ended up leaving middle school because she dealt with really bad verbal harassment. While Lavoto was sharing her story with an all girl student body, she gave them helpful hints on how they could inspire change among their classmates and friends. Demi said "turn something negative into a positive." An example of hers was how she turned bullying into her successful music career.

Lavota, who took home her first Moonman at this years VMAs after her song "Skyscraper" won Best Video With a Message, said two wrongs don't make a right. Instead of trying to get back at the bully, she was encouraging young people to channel their energy into a more positive outlet like their school work or pursuing their dreams.

If you would like to watch a short video about Demi Lavoto talking about putting a stop to bullying, there is a link. I think what she is doing right now will in the end pay off.

Book Review: Looks

Madeleine George's Looks pulled me in with her way of making two complete opposites come together.
In this story, it shows how a pretty skinny girl and a fat girl become friends and work together to plot against their enemy Cara, a girl who hurt them both. Meghan Ball, the fat girl, loses her used to be friend Cara. When Aimme Zorn, the skinny girl, goes to Meghan's school, she meets Cara and they become what you would think to be friends.
At first you want to like Cara for practically taking Aimme under her wing as she started her life at a whole new school. Cara invited Aimme over to her house to read and discuss poetry they have written. When Aimme read one of her poems she had wrote, Cara practically said she had felt the same way when she was sick, but never knew how to put it into words. Cara asked to keep the poem so she could look at it because she really liked it. Cara then ripped Aimme off by stealing her words and entering into a poetry contest.
All during this time, Meghan wanted to tell Aimme how Cara was a bad person because of what had happened in her past. Finally Meghan gets the chance to tell Aimme and they become the friends you would never have expected.
I would recommend this book, only to people who like to read books about people that have eating disorders of some kind of eating problem. This book is not for everyone.

Remembering 911

There are 400 plus swamp white oak trees planted on the plaza of where the World Trade Centers once stood. Each tree came from within 500 miles of NYC, including some Pennsylvania and Washington, DC. They planted those trees to honor the victims that were on flight 93 and on the attack on the Pentagon.

Bekahs Reading Bucket List

  1. Thin-by Grace Bowman: Books about eating disorders just facisnate me. I mean I do not have a problem, but I love reading books that talk about what others have had to go through to become so thin and then later reading what they have to go through to gain back all the weight they tried to get rid of.
  2. Just Listen-by Sarah Dessen: In this book, the girl loses her best friend. I can relate to the feelings she was feeling and what she is doing to cope with the loss of losing a friendship. It is about learning how to make new friends and also learning more about yourself.
  3. Skinny-by Laura L. Smith: Again, I just really enjoy these kinds of books. Sometimes, I do get caught up in some of the girls stories. It is hard to imagine myself having an eating disorder and hurting myself and the people that love and  care about me.
  4. Before I Fall-by Lauren Oliver: This book sounds interesting because the girl in the story only has one more day to live. The day she dies, she is still awake. She reveals the mystery to her death and realizes eveything she cherishes is in danger of losing.
  5. Miss Peregrines Home for Pecilular Children-by Ransom Rigg: I want to read this book bevause it sounds like might have a good story. Other than reading books about eating disorders, these kinds of books are my favorite too, with adventures and spookyness.
  6. The Perks of Being a Wallflower-by Stephen Chbosky: The only time I have ever seen this book title, is on the top 100 teen books and on a social networking site. I have some friend thay have said they liked this book. I am sure it is really intersting being that I am in almost the same grade as the person.
  7. Harry Potter (series)-by J.K. Rowling: When I was in elementary school, I read the first three books. I really enjoyed all the magic and excitement. I think it would be great to read the whole sereis, so I can compare the books to the movies.
  8. The Lord of The Rings-by J.R.R Tolkien: I have only watched the movies and that is because my cousin is obsessed and made me. I really liked the movie, so why not read the book? There is so much adventure that takes place.
  9. Go Ask Alice-by Anonymous: This book is about a fifteen year old girl with a drug addiction. She overdoses. Knowing people with addictions, this book could help them realzie that the drugs and the effects they have on their lives and other peoples lives are not worth taking the risks.
  10. The Last Unicorn-by Peter S. Beagle: Okay, this book sounds so interesting to me. One, because I really love unicorns. Two, the mystical creature leaves her protected forest to try and find her own kind. This book sounds like it has a lot of adventures in it.

Anthropomorphism

The cow dances like there's no tomorrow,
he slides and glides,
shakes and giggles,
while singing opera,
as he flies to the next field.

Frankenstien Changes

Victor Frankenstein changes throughout the story. At the beginning, he is so focused on trying to create life that he closes himself off from the people that love him. When his best friend Henry goes to see Frankenstein, he's checking on him to see if he's okay. Henry has become worried about Dr. Frankenstein. When the creature is alive, Dr. Frankenstein realized that he has done something terrible and wished he had never created the monster. Another way Frankenstein changed, was his love for Elizabeth. Frankenstein knew he loved her, but he didn't think about it very much. Near the end of the story, the monster kills Elizabeth and that makes Frankenstein realize how much Elizabeth meant to him.

How To Survive: Human Trafficking

Character Claim: Human trafficking, as thought of by most people involves the selling of young girls and boys into bondage for their vicious uses.

Have you ever wondered what the results would be if you ever met your online “buddy” for the first time, thinking everything would be perfect, but in reality he’s a pedophile. Pedophiles do crimes such as human trafficking, as thought of by most people involves the selling of young girls and boys into bondage for their vicious uses.

Some people may be wondering what human trafficking is. Human trafficking is the modern practice of slavery. Human trafficking is the second largest criminal industry in the world today. Reasons as to why people get trafficked can vary. According to “Citizens for Community Values,” all trafficking boils down to is profit. A girl who is forced into prostitution in Asia or in Africa brings in about $10,000 a year. If that same victim is trafficked into an industrialized country, that profit increases to $67,200. Another example of this is, The Call of the Wild. Buck, the dog gets sold from one person to another for many different reasons. In human trafficking, approximately 80% of victims are female, with 70% of those females trafficked into commercial sex industry. Also, according to “Citizens for Community Values,” they say the number of US citizens trafficked within the country are higher, with an estimated more than 200,000 American children at high risk for trafficking into sex industry each year. Human trafficking is not a topic people should  easily let go of. It could happen to someone close.
Anywhere people may go, they should always consider and take in their surroundings. As shown in the movie Taken, Kim was allowed to go to France with her friend Amanda. When they first got there, they were greeted by a very attractive young man. He turned out to be a “chicken hawk.” Amanda ended up dying from too many drugs and other reasons. Kim’s father was able to come and save her because she had paid attention to what her father had told her. Another example would be jobs. When applying for a job, one should find out and see if the job is official. In the article, “Citizens for Community Values,” it talks about a girl named Noi. She was trying to escape from her abusive foster family. She found a foreign labor agent in Bangkok who advertised for waitresses in Japan. Noi flew to Japan only to later learn that she had entered the country under a false tourist identity. She was taken to a karaoke bar, where the owner sexually abused her. Then he bought her. Noi said, “I felt like a piece of flesh being inspected.” She was told by the brothel madam that she had to pay off a large debt of travel expenses. She was also told, the girls who tried to escape were brought back by the Japanese mafia, beaten severely, and their debts doubled. To see as many clients as quickly as possible was the only way to pay off the debt. Some clients were extremely cruel, beating the girls with chains, belts, and sticks. If a victim returned crying, they were beaten severely by the madam. Victims were given pills to avoid pregnancy. Pregnancies were aborted at home. Victims, who did manage to pay off their debt, were often arrested by the police and then deported. With the help of a Japanese NGO, Noi finally managed to escape. As I think about Noi and her horrible ordeal, it makes me realize the importance of always being aware of the people around me.
The best way to survive human trafficking is avoid giving out personal information on the internet. For instance, always keep your guard up and take the time to get to know another member before you make plans to meet them. The USA has a public sex offender’s database where you can type in the name of the person you’re chatting with online to check if they have any history of sex offences. I did an interview with Gerald Robinson, the sheriff of Jefferson County, Arkansas. I asked him several questions.
Q: Does human trafficking happen in Arkansas?
A: Yes.

Q: Which part of Arkansas is more affected by human trafficking and why?
A: There is no particular area that is targeted according to statistical data.

Q: What suggestions would you have to help young people avoid getting involved in human trafficking?
A:

    * Beware of strangers.
    * Always tell someone if a stranger tries to talk or approach.
    * Avoid walking or traveling alone.
    * Always tell friends or family your where abouts.

Q: As the sheriff of Jefferson County, do you have educational  programs for the local schools?
A: Yes. The Jefferson County Sheriff Office has formed a partnership with the local schools for “The Be A Winner Programs” and school monitor programs that provide kids with a variety of education issues regarding to drugs, cigarettes, alcohol abuse, etc.
If one can follow these guidelines, one can keep clear of being trafficked.

Not many people worry about human trafficking. For future references, in order to gain knowledge about human trafficking, we must spread the word making it go worldwide such as the Kony 2012 issue.

What Does Being Human Mean?

Being human means being created by God. Genesis chapter one verse twenty-seven says, "Thus God created the man in his own image: in the image of God created he him: he created them male and female." The quoted scripture specifically says, God created man in his own image.

God created all living things. Man was created last, but man was Gods greatest creation because God created man in his own image. How do we know that man is superior to the animals? One way we know is, no animal has ever invented anything, men are always inventing things. For example, Bill Gates created Microsoft computer software. Thomas Edison invented the light bulb. There are many examples that could be cited. However, I challenge anyone to show me an example of anything invented by an animal. Another reason is, God gave Adam, the first man, the responsibility for naming the animals. Genesis chapter two verse twenty states, "the man therefore gave names unto all cattle, and to the fowl of the heaven, and to every beast of the field."

Being human means being accountable to God and to others. In Romans chapter fourteen verses eleven and twelve it says, "For it is written, As I live saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God. So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God." Since every knee bows to God and every tongue confesses to God, the question is WHEN? Animals are not under the same responsibility to confess or bow to God. This fact alone, proves that man is superior than animals. Being accountable to others involves many things. For instance, when someone joins a local church or some civic group, they agree to live by certain rules of that organization. A church rule might be to abstain from drinking alcohol. A rule of a civic organization might be to attend all of the meetings. If we are accountable to these organizations, we will try our best to obey the rules.

Charles Darwin who wrote "The Origin of The Species", tried to prove that all things evolved from one little organism. In the book "Frankenstein", a "living" creature was created from dead body parts and was called the Monster. If you believe Darwin, you must then accept the fact that it is impossible to create something from dead parts. Darwin, on his deathbed renounced his claim that all living things came from a single organism. Therefore, we are left with our original statement that God created all things.

In conclusion, one must decide, what do you believe? Do you believe there is a God in Heaven or do you believe when you die, you are just dead with no meaning to life? I choose to believe life has meaning and God gave us life.

Creating Life

If I was given the power to create life like Frankestein did, I would choose not to create life. The following are the reasons I would not creat life.

One of the reasons I would choose not to create life is because God created human life in his image. I believe God and God alone is the only one that has the authority and the power to create life. In Genesis, chapter two, verse seven says, "and the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life and man became a living soul."

The other reason is, I would not want the responsibility of creating an imperfect thing that might do harm. I do not believe in taking chances in areas that are unknown to man and clearly reserved for God. Some people might think that it is okay to take chances, hoping the results would be good. I prefer not to take chances when I am dealing with the unknown.

In conclusion, I believe that there are certain things that are reserved for God and mankind would be better off if we learned to respect and leave alone those areas of our lives that God controls.
